‘Experimental Pedagogies for Health and Care’ (June 15-16, Vienna) Workshop Recap and Reflections

How can we teach, share knowledge, and challenge traditional academic hierarchies within the Medical Humanities?

In the ‘Experimental Pedagogies for Health and Care’ workshop held at the University of Vienna from June 15–16, 2026, we sought to deeply engage with this question. The workshop offered the opportunity for researchers, activists, curators, and artists alike to reflect on how practice-based and collaborative methods can reshape our classrooms and institutions.

In a newly published workshop recap from the polyphone, contributors Genevieve Smart, Nora Heidorn, Maria Morata Marco, Monika Pietrzak-Franger, Katharina Wiedlack, Lyndsay Mann, and Sofie Layton share snapshots, critiques, and actionable takeaways from the event. The article offers some insight into embodied, and interdisciplinary tools that educators and researchers are already bringing into their own classrooms and creative spaces, reflections on navigating, critiquing, and transforming the systemic pressures embedded in academic and artistic environments as well as the new bridges built between traditional academic research and artistic practices to foster deeper, more inclusive approaches to health and care.

Whether you are an educator, student, artist, or researcher interested in the future of the Medical Humanities, this piece is well worth a read
