Winter Term (’25/’26) Cultural Studies/Medical Humanities Lecture: “Culture, Health and Justice”
This term, our very own Prof. Dr. Monika Pietrzak-Franger will take a critical look into the intertwining of medical practice, representations, and health politics in this new lecture series.
The development of the public sphere of health information has been profoundly shaped by a wide range of media, spanning from 17th-century broadsheets to contemporary social platforms like TikTok. This lecture will provide a critical overview of the patterns, developments, and characteristics of both historical and contemporary visual cultures of health.

Key Themes and Questions:
- Visualization of Health: We will explore how medical concepts such as health, disease, illness, and healing have been made visible through and in a variety of media.
- Social Discourses: We will inquire how discourses around body, gender, ethnicity, class, or age have informed these visual and medical practices, and how various organizations and corporations have used them to construct knowledges.
- Ethics and Identity: More fundamental queries concerning identity, inequality, and ethics in the media will accompany these discussions.
- Particular Emphasis: Special attention will be given to the visual culture surrounding sexual health.
This lecture takes a broad focus to include a variety of media, arts, and sciences.
